Summer Sun Safety
Guest post by Andrea Henriksen
Yay! It is time to soak up the sun and with sunshine should come sunscreen to protect our skin from the harmful rays.
Did you know that what goes on your skin impacts your body? There are 2 types of sunscreens, a chemical form and a mineral form. Both are used to create a protective layer over our skin. Yet sadly, the chemical form of sunscreens can do more harm to our bodies than they do to protect us.
There is new research out by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) which reveals that chemicals often used in conventional sunscreens may be endocrine disruptors, estrogenic and may interfere with thyroid and other hormone processes in the body. Yikes! Definitely a reason to avoid chemical sunscreens.
So, let’s look at our labels and learn what to avoid.
The following ingredients are red flags and a HUGE NO:
- Oxybenzone (really bad and can damage coral reefs)
- Oxtonoxate (really bad and can damage coral reefs)
Sadly, many of the top popular brands are using these ingredients! Other harmful ingredients to avoid are:
- Retinyl Palmite
- Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate
Don’t feel defeated... we can find sunscreen that is safe for out bodies and will protect us from the sun!
Look for mineral sunscreens. They often use Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredient. Titanium Dioxide in a liquid form is safe. Ideally, you want to see the Zinc Oxide listed as Non-Nano ingredient too. Also make sure you are selecting Broad Spectrum, getting both UVA and UVB protection.
The good news is there are some safe brands out there! Here are a few to check out the next time you are out soaking up the sun:
- Badger (reef safe)
- Babo Botanicals (reef safe)
- Thinkbaby & Thinksport
- Raw Elements (reef safe)
- Crunchi (reef safe)
