Tips from a Life-Long Reader
Books have been a part of my life since the day I was born, and I’m so thankful for this. Both my parents are avid readers, and I can still remember crawling into their laps and asking what they were reading.
I know our lives are busy and distractions pull us in every direction, but reading is so important because sometimes we need to step out of our specific circumstances — even for 10 minutes! Books help us learn from different perspectives, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, and they broaden our thinking in so many ways.
How can we make reading a habit in these busy lives of ours?
I will start by recommending audiobooks, which work great for me because of what I do. We live in the country, so I get lots of time in the car to listen — not to mention time at the sewing machine. I especially love when the author is the reader so I can hear their actual voice. Audiobooks might not be ideal for everyone or every type of book, but they can be such a great way to multitask. Whether I’m driving, washing dishes or folding laundry, I often have a book going.
Another tip is to read with others for some accountability. Ask a friend to read a book with you, or join a local book club. This can give the small push that we often need to make reading a priority!
Also, read with your kids! I think it’s important for your children to see you read because, as we know, kids really do learn by example. My daughter Ivy is my biggest reader, and we love our “book parties.” The younger kids go down for bed, and she and I simply read next to each other. We both love it!
As with so many habits, a basic tip is to start with 10 minutes a day. You will truly surprise yourself at how many pages you will read! And plan out when you’ll read. For example, my parents always had a stack of books next to their bed, so I’ve just learned to fall asleep to a book. Or, starting your day with the Bible is a tried and true routine that will bless you more than you could know. (And maybe you could treat yourself to a new Bible cover!)
One author I’m loving recently is Kristen Hannah. The Nightingale, her book about the French resistance during WWII, is SO gripping! I used to only ever read non-fiction, but lately I’ve needed something lighter. :) I’m also reading Things That Matter by Joshua Becker. Anything by him is really good.
