Many people who have their own business want to know how to deal with competition. I’m a competitive person and I think you must have a competitive edge to start a business because of the thrill and risk involved. This is a very big deal in the field of “makers” so here are my thoughts regarding competition in business.
Remind yourself that each of us is gifted in our own way. We are created differently and uniquely by God.
Be consistent in your look, delivery, attitude and service. The more consistent you are, the more recognizable you are to your customers and competitors. Doing this helps them know what they can expect from you and helps clarify your brand.
Go the extra 10%. Out-do your competition by doing something 10% better. Maybe that means hand-delivering 1 out of every 10 items, or shipping something early, or handwriting a thank you note to your customers!
Tell your story and explain your “why.” It’s not that your story is better than your competition but it helps people connect with you and builds confidence. When people know your “why” they will buy from you!
Make competitors aware of who you are in a nice way. This can be uncomfortable but it can be well worth it if it means you don’t have to take legal action for things like copyright issues. It’s hard to hate the “nice gal” so be authentic in your dealings!
Limit time on Pinterest. I go on Pinterest for about 20 minutes to get inspired but I don’t pin anything that I would like to try. This is my barrier to prevent me from copying someone else.
Above all else remember that God has a plan for GOOD for you! Believe in that and in your unique gift that He gave you!
Take some time to think about your business and what sets it apart from your competition. If you don’t have a clear story or “why” you are in business, take a few moments to jot that down. Do you know who your main competitors are? Do they know who YOU are? How do you safeguard against copying others?
